Homemade Pita Bread From Scrach

If you ever had a shawrma or a falafel and ever wondered what’s the white bread called. Its the perfect fluffy but soft pita bread. My homemade pita bread is a must try once.

What is a pita bread?

Pita bread is a middle eastern flat bread just like an Indian roti/flat bread. Pita bread is a typical flat bread that has pocket inside which is then filled with delicious filling or used as a wrap.

What is a difference between a roti/flat bread and a pita bread?

The difference between a roti and pita bread is that roti does not need any yeast and is mostly made fresh with wheat flour and water. But a pita bread is first risen with yeast to creat air in the dough. Once cooked a pita bread forms a pocket inside it that remains even after its puffed down.

Is making fresh pita bread worth the effort?

Making a fresh pita bread is definitely worth it as its more tastier. Whatever brand pita bread you buy will never be the same as fresh one.

Homemade pita bread is very easy to make and can be made with or without oven.

Can I make pita bread with whole wheat flour?

Yes, you can use the same recipe to make a wholewheat pits bread. However it may not be as fluffy as an all purpose flour one will be.

Can I store pita bread?

Pita bread is best when consumed fresh. But it can be easily stored for up to a week in fridge. Just reheat on a skillet when you want to consume it.

Directions to make Homemade Pita Bread from scratch-

Ingredients-

3 cups All purpose flour, maida + extra flour for dusting

1 tsp instant yeast

1 tsp salt

1 tsp sugar

1 cup water + more for kneading

3 tbsp oil + more as needed

Method-

In a large bowl add 3 cups flour, salt and mix.

In a sauce pan add 1 cup water and heat till warm(not hot). If you have a thermometer heat till water is 110°C.

Once warm add yeast and sugar. Mix and leave it for 10 mins.

After 10 mins the yeast will froth up.

Add to the flour and salt mix.

Either use a processor or by hand start knead the dough.

Gradually add the 3 tbsp oil little by little.

If needed add more water but be warned not to add too much otherwise the dough will be sticky.

Once the dough is kneaded cover with a wet kitchen towel and keep it aside for 90 mins.

The dough would have doubled from the yeast. Punch it down and give it a quick knead.

Divide the dough in small balls to make the pita bread. Keep them covered with the same wet cloth and leave for 20 mins.

Use little dry flour to dust your surface and rolling pin.

Roll each ball in a flat bread.

Place it on a medium hot tawa/skillet.

Now once you see some bubbles flip it.

Wait for it to fluff up and create an air pocket.

If it doesn’t fluff flip it again and wait.

Or if you see the bread fluffing up from one side you can give it a nudge and it will fluff up.

Mostly the trick is to use medium high heat and leave it alone.

  1. In your pita recipe, you say that hot water (not boiling) should be added. Then you say that that water should be 110° C. WATER BOILS AT 100° C!4 stars

    1. That’s not much of a difference. The meaning of hot water and not boiling is that if you put your finger in the water it should be hot and not boiling that you may burn your finger. Hope this helps.

  4. Love baking pita bread at home as they tend to turn out much softer and fluffier. Best part is that they are fresh unlike store bought ones which may have preservatives. Your pita bread certainly look so soft, fluffy and inviting.

  6. I love pita bread. Here we call it khubz or Arabic bread. The pleasure derived in a homemade pita bread is unbeatable, more so when the pita bread fluffs up.
