Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu fastival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha. Its a ten day festival where devotees welcome Lord Ganesh Idols into homes or community as a whole.
Offerings and prasadam is offered after prayers, often sweets and fruits. One such sweet claimed to be Lord Ganesha’s favorite is Modak.
Traditional modak has a filling with an other covering Made with rice flour and then seemed.
Here I have 3 variety of modak-
Lets begin-
Directions to make modak 3 ways
Modak made in chocolate flavor. Sweets for ganesh chaturthi as offered for prasadam.
- 1 cup grated mawa
- 1/3 cup chocolate chips (Or 4 tbsp cocoa powder)
- 2 tbsp sugar (Or as per your taste)
- 1 pinch cadamom powder (elichi)
- Ghee to grease the molds
-
Prepare all the ingredients before making modak.
-
Grease modak mold lightly and keep aside.
-
In a pan(i used nonstick) heat mawa on a low flame.
-
Mawa will start melting, add sugar at this stage. Cook but make sure that mawa does not turn brown. Also add elichi powder.
-
Now also quickly as the chocolate chips or cocoa powder.
If you add chocolate chips it will take time for it to dry out into a thick mass. If you add cocoa powder the mixture will dry faster. But taste in both case will be different.
-
Now as soon as the mixture leaves the pan. Switch of the gas.
-
Let it cool down enough to handle.
-
Fill the modak mold completely, close it and they will come out in shape of a modak.
-
Repeat with all the mixture. Its ready.
Modak made with cashews/kaju. Traditional sweets for prasadam during Ganpati.
- 1/2 cup Powdered sugar (use less as per taste)
- 1/4 cup ful fat milk
- 1 cup powdered cashews
- 1/4 tsp ghee to grease the modak mold
-
In a pan start by mixing milk and sugar. Cook this till the milk starts to evaporate and mixture thicken almost like condense milk.
-
Now ass the cashew mixture. Cook but don't let it brown(use very low heat).
-
The mixture should leave the sides, its done. Switch of the gas and let it cool enough to handle.
-
Using aa modak mold(grease the molds) make modak's, its ready!!
Add little kesar with milk for a variety of flavor.
Kesar Mawa modak made with evaporated milk and saffron. Offerings to Lord Ganesha in prasadam.
- 1 cup Mawa
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp cardamom powder green elichi
- 8-9 saffron strands mix with 2 tbsp warm milk
- 2-3 drops yellow food coloring optional
-
Grate mawa and prep all the ingredients before starting.
-
Now on low heat mix mawa, sugar, saffron milk and cook.
-
Keep stirring.
-
As it cooks the mixture will become like a mass. Dont over dry it as it will thicken even after its cooked.
-
Now cool the mixture enough to handle.
-
Grease the modak mould and shape the modak, its ready!!
