Chicken Cafreal is a spicy chicken preparation made in Goa.
The dish originated from Portuguese colonies in the African continent. It was introduced into the Goan cuisine by the Portuguese and the African soldiers serving under the Portuguese. Chicken Cafreal is made very spicy with a lot of dry spices and chillies. Served with potato and lime wedges.
Directions to make Chicken Cafreal-
Ingredients:
For the cafreal marination-
2 cups coriander leaves
3 green chilies
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1/2 tsp coriander leaves
1 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp fennel seeds
1/2 tsp clove
1 inch cinnamon stick
1 tsp black peppercorn
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 inch ginger
8 garlic cloves
2 tsp vinegar
2 tsp water
For chicken Cafreal curry-
1kg chicken
Salt as per taste
Black pepper powder as per taste
5-6 tbsp oil
2 large onions roughly chopped
Juice of 1 lemon
Method:
Blend all the ingredients under Cafreal Masala and keep aside.
Now clean the chicken and marinate with salt and lemon juice for about 15 mins.
After 15 mins are over add the Cafreal Masala and marinate for another 30 mins.
**since adding lemon juice earlier this cannot be left marinated for more than that.
Heat the oil in a heavy bottom pan. Saute the onions till translucent.
Add the marinated chicken and cook till chicken is cook. This takes about 20 mins.
Serve hot with pav/dinner rolls or paratha. And some onions on the side?
